NAIROBI, Feb. 8 — Kenya will host a major national youth summit later this week to discuss challenges facing the youth in the country, organizers said on Monday.

The February 13 Emerging Leaders Summit, which will be held under the auspices of the World Youth Alliance Africa brings together over 200 youth leaders across Kenya.

The meeting, whose theme is Peace — Our Responsibility for National Development, will be officially opened by the US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger among other senior politicians.

"We have put together a formidable summit that will jog minds of Kenyan youth leaders and chart a new course for youth engagement in societal processes," said Hezbon Mogambi, Director of Operations, World Youth Alliance Africa Region.

The conference on Peace by the Youth is taking place in Kenya at a time when the east African nation is trying to address problems connected with the post election violence of 2007 during which a lot of youth were involved.

"The Summit is indeed relevant to Kenya's prevailing problems among the youth which is why we want to create a platform for dialogue for both the youth and our leaders," Mugambi said.

The World Youth Alliance is a global coalition of over one million young people from around the world between the ages of 10 to 30 years promoting the dignity of the human person along building solidarity among youth from developed and developing countries.

The organization which has been accredited to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) since 2004, works in three areas of focus including training, advocacy and culture.

World Youth Alliance operates in five regions including Europe – - Brussels, Africa — Nairobi, Asia Pacific — Manilla, Latin America — Mexico City and North America — New York. (PNA/Xinhua)
