N. Korean leader's 3rd son gets party posts, seen as next leader

PYONGYANG/BEIJING, Sept. 29 — North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's third son Jong Un has joined the leadership of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, the country's official media reported Wednesday, making it almost certain that he will become the next leader.

Kim Jong Un, 27, was elected as a Central Committee member at a conference of party delegates Tuesday and named a vice chairman of the party's Central Military Commission — a newly created post — at a plenary meeting of the committee later in the day, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

If Kim Jong Un succeeds the 68-year-old leader, it will represent the continuation of the Kim dynasty into a third generation. Kim Jong Il took over leadership when his father and the country's founder Kim Il Sung died in 1994. (PNA/Kyodo)
