LOS BANOS, LAGUNA, Sept. 30 - The University of the Philippines (UP) here marked its 92nd Loyalty Day and Alumni Homecoming with thousands of alumni coming from various parts of the country and abroad, invited guests and friends in attendance.
University officials have lined up several exciting activities from sports, out-of-campus tours, lecture series, product exhibits, sky diving exhibition and the like to make the occasion a success. <P>This years celebration, themed, UPLB: Kaagapay sa Pagbabago, started on Sept. 25 and will culminate on Oct. 17 with a salo-salo lunch, general assembly, grand centennial raffle and the unveiling of College of Agriculture marker at the intersection of Sampaloc and Royal Palm roads inside the campus.
Last Oct. 25 and Oct. 26, tennis enthusiasts pitted skills in the 1st Boston Café Team Tennis Doubles Tournament, which is extended to Oct. 2-3 at the UPLB Baker Hall Tennis Courts. On Oct. 1, hundreds of Alumni will showcase their golf swings during the UPLBAA Golf Tournament at the South Forbes Golf and Country Club in Sta. Rosa City.
On Oct. 3, Mr. Manny Barradas, BSA 1970, will host a prelude to the LD celebration at his residence in Barangay Santol in Tanauan, Batangas.
Officials said the Loyalty Day will also be an opportunity for cultivating the life of the mind with a lecture series from Oct. 5 to 8. The College of Agriculture will host the UPLB Centennial Professional Chair Lectures themed "Leading the College of Agriculture to New Heights in Education, Research, and Extension in Tropical Agriculture: the UPLBCA Agenda for 2011-2035," at the Drilon Hall in the SEARCA compound.
On Oct. 7, the UPLB Centennial Lecture Series will have Dr. Isagani Sarmiento as the sixth centennial fellow to speak on the topic "Transformational Leader of Quality and Productivity." Dr. Sarmientos lecture will be held at the CAS Auditorium.
The College of Veterinary Medicine will host the UPLB Professorial Chair Lecture with the theme "Strengthening Veterinary Medical Education at CVM-UPLB for the Next 25 Years" on Oct. 8 at the CVM Lecture Room 1.
The celebration will also see the holding of one of its traditional activities – the Flower and Garden Show – on Oct. 8-17 at the Senior's Social Garden. The show will feature fruits, vegetables, brown rice varieties, seeds, organic vegetables, and fruit trees, among others.
Oct. 9 is another full day for the alumni. The alumni homecoming of each college starts at 8 AM while the dedication of the Languages and Humanities Portal in front of the UPLB Post Office along Lanzones Road will begin at 8:30 AM. CEM will inaugurate the CEM Gazebo on Lanzones Road. Registration for the Alumni Fellowship and Awards Night will be held at the EB Copeland Gym followed by viewing of the UPLB Technology and Products Exhibit in the same gym.
Many activities have also been lined up from Oct. 10 to the last day of the celebration, beginning with the Sunrise Reveille and Wake Up Call at the UPLB Campus, followed by the Loyalty Day Parade that starts at 8 a.m. with participants assembling at the back of the EB Copeland Gymnasium.
There will be a skydiving exhibition near the UPLB Freedom Park while the parade is on-going.
On Oct. 17, the souvenir item stalls of various UPLB units, UPLBFI, and UPLBAA, will be opened at 10 AM at the EB Copeland Gymnasium, followed by a Salu-Salo lunch, the UPLBAA General Assembly and the Grand Centennial Raffle Draw at the EB Copeland Gym.(PNA) V3/FMB
