MANILA, Oct. 28 The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said on Thursday it has fielded police bike patrols in its bid to lessen criminality in the city.
Sporting blue-collared polo shirts and shorts, Quezon Citys young, energetic and medium-built policemen are now seen on bike patrol assignments in the citys commercial and busy areas, particularly in places being visited by tourists.
QCPD director Chief Supt. Benjardi Mantele informed Mayor Herbert M. Bautista during a regular executive staff meeting that an initial batch of 20 policemen, mostly rookie cops from the District Public Safety Battalion (DPSB) who are mostly physically fit and have good stamina, are manning one of the citys busy business center — the Cubao area.
Cubao area was chosen as a launching pad for the project after the Araneta Business Center Association strongly supported the move by donating some of the needed uniforms and equipment needed by bike patrol cops, especially the 20 units of mountain bikes to be utilized for the purpose.
Under Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Director General Raul Bacalzos letter of instruction, all Police Regional Offices down to Municipal Police Stations shall create and organize a dedicated unit to be called Tourist Police to be deployed in identified tourist destinations and retirement communities.
The move, Mantele said, is also in line with the city government's plan to develop Quezon City as one of the tourist centers in Metro Manila. (PNA) scs/JCA
