MANILA, Dec. 30 – Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista led city government officials in a wreath-laying ceremony commemorating the 114th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal at the QC Hall grounds on Thursday.
In a brief speech, Bautista said Dr. Rizal is an example of a peaceful person who fought for Philippine independence with the use of the pen.
Also at the commemorative rites were Ms. Asuncion Ma. S. Faustman, a descendant of the national hero; Second District Councilor Godofredo Liban II, QC Police District director Chief Supt. Benjardi Mantele and other city department and office heads, including Secretary to the Mayor Tadeo Palma
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, who had been invited as guest of honor and speaker, was represented at the Rizal Day rites by Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Richard Anthony D. Fadullon.
Born on June 19, 1861, Rizal became one of the countrys leading reformists. He also inspired the revolution against the Spanish conquerors through his writings and novels such as "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo." He was martyred on Dec. 30, 1896. (PNA) scs/JCA
