City reconstitutes solid waste management board

ILOILO CITY, June 27 – Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog has reorganized the structure of the Iloilo City Solid Waste Management Board (ICSWMB) by issuing Executive Order No. 34 amending EO 005-2010 to make it relevant to the present local socio-economic and political conditions.

Mabilog's move also aims to further strengthen sectoral participation in setting local waste management policies and actions.

The newly-reconstituted board is headed by the mayor, with Councilor Dave Jamora as vice chairperson. Jamora is the head of the City Council’s committee on environment.

With the changes in the organization, the board is tasked to develop strategies and programs that shall help enforce the solid waste management plan in the city’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP); integrate various solid waste management plans and strategies of villages; monitor implementation of solid waste management plans; and adopt measures to ensure viability and effective implementation of programs, among others.

The Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates the creation of solid waste management boards in every local government unit to promote policies and actions and address related environmental concerns.

Other members of the ICSWMB are the president of the Association of Barangay Captains-Iloilo City; the president of Sangguniang Kabataan Federation-Iloilo City; non-government organizations represented by Uswag Calajunan Livelihood Association (UCLA); one representative each from the media and the academe, Environmental Management Bureau, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, City Planning and Development Office, Office of the City Engineer, Office of General Services, Iloilo City Police Office, Task Force Clean and Green; Mario Segovia, representative from recycling sector; Dr. Urminico Baronda of City Health Office; and Councilor Lyndon Acap, chairperson of the City Council’s committee on health, sanitation and hospital services.
