ASEAN Anti-terror confab pushes through

CAMP GENERAL EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City, Sept. 28 — Despite of heavy rains and strong winds, Southeast Asia’s military intelligence analysts met Wednesday to discuss pressing issues regarding terrorism, with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as its host.

The idea of bringing terrorism experts together was brought up by Maj. Gen. Francisco Cruz Jr. and was formally agreed upon in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the approval of the Defense and military chiefs to hold the conference in the Philippines.

The two-day excursion seeks to know the current strengths/capabilities of terrorists within the region, evaluate the role of media in promoting terrorist ideological propaganda, and share best practices and experiences with various analytical tools and techniques with the end in view of formulating a regional approach in support of counter-terrorism.

Alina Binti Abang Haji Omarzuki and Noorhazwani Binti Haji Ariffin of Brunei, LtC Say Samet and Maj Kheav Lux from Cambodia, Col Bambang Sulistyono and LtC Richard Martua Hasiholan Tampubolon from Indonesia, Maj Manyphet Buphalasy and Capt Khampat Songsamay from Laos, LtC Rosmin Bin Muhammed and Maj Syed Azhar Bin Syed Abu Bakar from Malaysia, LtCol Tun Myat Shwe and Maj Ye Lin Maung from Myanmar, LtC Chakorn Luxsanayotin and Maj Praweena Klinsrisook from Thailand, LtC Nicholas Seow and ME4 Yap Kwong Weng from Singapore, and Col Bui Xuan Mai and Maj Ha Van Duong from Vietnam graced the event.

Embassy Representatives also witnessed the exchange of military intelligence talks. They include: Mr. Malcolm Gregory Kung (Counsellor) and Joe Koh from Singapore, Sr Capt. Ha Vu from Vietnam, Khamfeuang Phantahaxay from Laos as well as Embassy Representatives from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.

Defense attaches also attended the conference, which include Col. Irvin Lim Fang Jau from Singapore, Group Captain Boonruang Homcachorn from the Naval Attache, Thailand, LCDR Mohammad Sobri Bin Awang Kechik from the Asst Attache, Malaysia, Col Djakaria P. Girsang from Indonesia, LtC Alirupendi Bin Haji Perudin from Brunei, Col Jensen from the United States, Ms. Ma. Antonina S. Leong, MNSA, Mr. Candido Bontogon, Col Marte S. Chioco (Ret), MS. Louena Consorio, CA Beth Doria, CA Lea Jusi, Sgt Lera Antoniette R. Anduiza, CA Diana Lou L. Boado, CA Jackie Frances E. Guevarra, CA Poe M. Lachica, CA Anna Liza P. Ochoco, CA Maria Aurora A. The theme for this year’s conference, “Working Towards Convergence in Combating Terrorism within the ASEAN Region,” is seen as an opportunity among the ASEAN militaries to cooperate in exterminating terrorism and enhance and strengthen networking ties among ASEAN military intelligence analysts.
