Central Visayas cops on high alert for All Saints’ Day

CEBU CITY, Oct. 27 – The police in Central Visayas are on a heightened alert starting Thursday in preparation for the All Saints’ Day and All Souls' Day observance.

Chief Supt. Marcelo Garbo Jr., director of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7, said they have already laid out the security plans for the long weekend.

”All areas that need protection are covered,” he said during the "Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis" (TSIP) forum.

Garbo said there is a need to tighten security because many tourists are coming to the region this weekend.

At least 2,925 police personnel will be deployed to secure ports, airports, bus terminals and around 363 cemeteries in the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental, said Senior Supt. Louie Oppus, PRO 7 deputy director for operations.

Over 800 force multipliers, like anti-crime volunteers, will also help the police.

Garbo said they will also coordinate with the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, and Philippine Maritime Police.

According to data gathered by Senior Supt. Erson Digal, chief of the Regional Operations and Plans Division (ROPD), Cebu province has the most cemeteries with 141. Lapu-Lapu City has only four cemeteries.

In each cemetery, according to Digal, there is a Public Assistance Hub where police personnel and medics are stationed.

Digal will also lead the PRO 7 Tactical Operations Center, which will receive reports from the lower units.

In Mandaue City, Senior Supt. Noel Gillamac said they will secure at least eight cemeteries, the Ouano wharf and the North Bus Terminal.

The Cebu City Police Office will deploy 300 cops with 200 force multipliers on Friday.

Cebu Provincial Police Director Patrocinio Comendador said over 1,500 police officers are in place to secure the cemeteries in different towns throughout Cebu.

Comendador also advised the public not to sell or drink liquor in the cemetery, use a loud sound system, engage in gambling and bring deadly weapons.

He told them to be wary of thieves, bring something to drink, dispose of waste properly, secure homes before leaving for the cemetery, and bring identification cards for children who may get lost. (PNA) scs/FFC/EB/re
