Ilongga in Dubai to receive Bagong Bayani Award

ILOILO CITY, Oct 27 -– An Ilongga who is currently based at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was chosen as one of the 2011 Bagong Bayani Awardees for Community and Social Service by the Bagong Bayani Foundation in partnership with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA).

Marilyn Lasquite Roscales, who acquired the name Wafa Kasimieh upon embracing the Islam faith, has been extending charitable works not only to her fellow Filipinos in Dubai but back here in the Philippines, including her hometown Iloilo.

Labor Attaché Amilbahar Amilasan announced the result of the annual search upon receipt of information from the organizer and was consequently featured in a news website www.kabayanweekly.com, which is based in Dubai.

One of the recipients of her charitable work is the Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial Hospital (DRYLMH) in Lambunao where she donated among others facilities for the out-patient department (OPD), medical supplies and other provisions for hospital rooms.

She also facilitated the construction of a P4-million classroom building at the Caninguan Elementary School, extended scholarship and livelihood assistance, donated around 90 water pumps and constructed comfort rooms at the municipal cemetery all in Lambunao town.

She also extended help to as far as Bicol and Mindanao regions.

The funds were donations from generous donors back in the UAE as well as from her personal fund.

Kasimieh is a native of Brgy. Cunarom, Lambunao. They used to rely then on the meager income of their parents as farmers and market vendors for daily sustenance.

She was later send to school by the Lebata Family also in Lambunao until she was able to finish a degree and earned a job as a secretary in one company in Dubai.

Currently, she is working as Senior Advisor of the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai.

She is also the vice-president of the Lambunaonons in UAE and representative of the Filipino Community in Dubai and Northern Emirates (FilCom DNE) as member of the governing council.

The national search for the country’s outstanding and exemplary OFWs was aimed at recognizing their efforts in “fostering goodwill among people of the world, enhance and promote the image of the Filipino as a competent, responsible and dignified worker and for greatly contributing to the socio-economic development of their communities and the Philippines as a whole.”

The awarding ceremony will be held at the Malacanang in December 1 with no less than President Benigno S. Aquino III. (PNA) DCT/LAM/ajp/PGL/vlo
