ILOILO CITY, Oct. 28 – The Partnership in Environmental Management for South East Asia (PEMSEA) was impressed with the integrated coastal management (ICM) program of Guimaras province, one of its identified parallel sites.
PEMSEA program manager Renato Cardinal during his recent visit here said that the province has been active in implementing sustainable development programs in line with the ICM.
PEMSEA has extended support to the province on capacity building, project management and direction since the program inception.
Guimaras joined PEMSEA in 2008 where it developed a three-year program to achieve sustainable development targets.
Cardinal said that they look forward for the institutionalization of the ICM program in Guimaras as one of their expectations.
“We are hoping that the governor (Felipe Hilan Nava) will continue the program,” Cardinal said as he added that the ICM has already produced good results.
The PEMSEA is implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It works in the collaboration with stakeholders of the Seas of East Asia and serves as regional coordinating mechanism for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Seas of East Asia (SDS-SEA).
Currently, the PEMSEA is also working closely with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the Philippine Ports Authority–Iloilo for the latter’s Port Safety Health Environmental Management System (PSHEMS). (PNA)
