Salaries of premier, ministers to be cut to finance reconstruction

TOKYO, Oct. 28 — The Cabinet of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda decided Friday to cut his salary by 30 percent and that of Cabinet ministers and senior vice ministers by 20 percent starting November to finance reconstruction works in the March disaster-ravaged areas.

While the pay cuts are incorporated in a bill seeking a 7.8 percent reduction on average in the salaries of public servants through March 2014, the Cabinet members will carry out their pay cuts in advance to show their decisive stance on cutting expenditures to promote reconstruction.

The bill, if enacted, would enable the government to secure 290 billion yen a year to be used for reconstruction works. (PNA/Kyodo) scs/rsm
