MANILA, Nov. 30 — Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri hailed Katipunan founder Gat Andres Bonifacio as Caloocan's greatest son during the celebration of the 148th birth anniversary of the hero at the foot of the imposing Bonifacio Monument in the city.
A City Council resolution signed by Echiverri states that recognizing Bonifacio is part of the honor that the city can bestow upon the "Great Plebeian" who was married to Gregoria de Jesus from the former town of Caloocan.
Bonifacio went through a lot of hardships in his quest for independence. Aside from battling those who wanted to take his life, he faced the controversy brought about by malicious accusations of his colleagues. But in the end, we all benefited from his hardships, Echiverri, who led the floral offerings at the monument, said.
They said that a persons heroism and leadership is brought out by necessity. In his case, Bonifacios heroism and leadership came through amid the presence of foreign oppressors who threatened the countrys freedom, he added.
The mayor noted that the people of Caloocan have also made their mark in history through the recent reforms that it underwent something that the residents can be proud of and share with the future generations.
Also present at the celebration were Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas president and Councilor Ricojudge Echiverri, other city councilors, chiefs of the different city hall departments, city hall employees, business leaders, school principals, teachers and students, among others. (PNA) scs/PFN/ssc
