BORACAY Island, Aklan, Jan. 31 — Business groups here are helping in the conservation of coral reefs in this resort island.
The Boracay Foundation Incorporated (BFI) and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Boracay are among them.
Already, they had started deploying temporary coral reefs and reef buds to protect the remaining coral reefs here.
Mike Labatiao, BFI chairman on committee on environment, said that they are currently conducting inventory assessment on the coral reefs available in this resort island.
On Saturday, the Sangkalikasan Producers Cooperative will deploy more reef buds around Boracay. The funding of the deployment comes from the P50-million assistance of Senator Loren Legarda.
Felipe Huibonhoa, chairman of the cooperative, said some 90 percent of the remaining coral reefs here are being threatened due to environmental degradation.
The Stordal Marine Corporation, a Cebu-based manufacturer of funjets, has also vowed to help in the conservation efforts in Boracay. (PNA) LAP/LAM/AJP/JNAguirre/vlo
