DENR in Zambo targets 1 million trees planted by end ‘16

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Feb. 28 – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Community Environment and Natural Resource Office (CENRO), aims to plant over a million trees near the end of 2016 in this city.

CENRO officer Ben Acana said the target to plant one million seedlings by the end of 2016 is attainable because more groups were planting seedlings in the different forested areas of the city's east and west coast.

The areas being planted include mangrove areas like Sta. Cruz islands and nearby Sacol Island group.

Acana cited the planting of bakawan or mangrove propagules in the two island of Santa Cruz, fronting the local port last Saturday and Sunday.

He said that several students and members of the Philippine Navy's Coast Guard Auxiliary, including Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairmen, its kagawads and environmental engineering students planted more than 5,000 Bakawan propagules/seedlings at the two Sta. Cruz Islands.

More than 2,000 Bakawan propagules/seedlings were also planted in mangrove areas of Talon Talon and Mampang and nearby areas in the East Coast of the city to make these areas spawning grounds for fishes, crabs, Bangus seedlings and other species, including birds.

"By the end of the year 2016, I am hoping that our city's forested areas, particularly in denuded mountains will already be planted with more than One Million trees.

“We hope that these becomes forests that will help us protect from big floods and environmental problems. I am urging the people to please help us plant more seedlings in our neighborhood to make the city as one of the best forested city in Mindanao," he said.

Several government and non-government organizations have requested the CENRO office for more seedlings for their tree planting activities in the days to come, Acana said. (PNA) LAP/FMS/utb
