Tokyo local gov't. conducts anti-terrorist drill at Sky Tree

TOKYO, April 30 — The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Sumida Ward conducted an anti-terrorist drill Monday at the 634-meter-high Tokyo Sky Tree, the world's tallest self-supporting tower, prior to its grand opening in late May.

About 1,000 people took part in the drill held at one of the tower's observation decks, which is 350 meters above the ground, under the scenario that a terrorist had sprayed a toxic chemical inside the deck while it was packed with tourists, according to the local government officials.

In the drill, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Tokyo Fire Department acted to help injured people, while security guards of the tower led unharmed visitors to escape via about 2,000 emergency stairs. (PNA/Kyodo)
