MANILA, May 25 — The city of Makati is celebrating its 342nd Foundation Day with 1,852 delegates coming from 356 sister local government units (LGUs) joining city officials, constituents and stakeholders in the revelry.
Mayor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay said the mayors, councilors and delegation members of the sister LGUs would have a Fellowship Dinner with Vice President Jejomar Binay at the World Trade Center on Friday night.
Makati City continues to give premium importance its sister cities and municipalities because we regard them as our partners in nation-building. It is through collaboration and cooperation that local governments can accomplish more on any front, the mayor said.
The delegates will also witness the Makati Grand Parade spectacle, where unique and colorful performances by residents will be featured on Saturday. In the evening, they will be treated to a carnival show dubbed Karnabal sa Makati at the Makati Coliseum.
Earlier on Friday, Makati and 11 LGUs signed a sisterhood pact through their mayors, as represented by Oscar Camantiles for Itogon, Benguet; Ernesto Bagasbas for Balatan, Camarines Sur; Filipina Grace America for Infanta, Quezon; and Renonia Muramatsu, Famy, Laguna, all in Luzon.
The LGUs from Visayas as represented by their respective mayors included Rene Cordero representing Estancia, Iloilo; Gerardo Espina, Sr. of Kawayan, Biliran; Ian Christopher Escario, Bantayan, Cebu; Dindo Rios, San Fernando, Romblon; Christine Garin, Guimbal, Iloilo; and Norberto Raymundo, Jr., Libertad, Antique. The sole delegation from Mindanao was the local government of Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte, led by Mayor Flora Villarosa.
The city government of Makati has been establishing ties with local governments from the time that Vice President Binay was the Mayor to foster sharing of best practices and economic and social assistance with each other.
Makati offers assistance that would enhance the literacy rate of students from sister LGUs, such as computer units and books.
Mayor Binay has announced that qualified students from sister LGUs will be given scholarship at the Makati Science High School upon the completion of its new building.
He said that qualified students would also be given a stipend and accommodation inside the school campus. Constituents of our sister LGUs can also avail of medical services offered by Ospital ng Makati, he said.
