Earthquake drills in school start in Pasig

MANILA, June 29 — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday started conducting its earthquake drills in public schools at Pasig Central Elementary School in Barangay San Nicolas, Pasig City,

NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said that doing the earthquake drill in school would serve as a refresher for the students in effectively dealing with major calamities.

”We are doing this (earthquake drills) after three months in school to increase the awareness of people on earthquakes to ensure their maximum survivability,” Ramos said.

”We don’t know when a big earthquake will hit the country but it is better to prepare for any eventuality,” Ramos said.

The drill is to showcase the students' and school personnel’s preparedness in times of disasters such as earthquakes as they demonstrate the Philippine Institute of Volcanology-reinforced “Duck, Cover and Hold” position, and quick evacuation to designated open space.

Members of the Pasig City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council such as the Pasig City- Bureau of Fire Protection, PNP- Pasig City Police, Pasig City Health Office, and other local search and rescue groups demonstrated how the local government would respond to the disaster.

NDRRMC said the drill was part of its four-point action plan on disaster preparedness , namely public information, education, communication, and preparedness for response. NDRRMC conducted the drills on a quarterly basis since 2006.

Secretary Voltaire Gazmin of the Department of National Defense, Department of Education Secretary Bro. Armin A. Luistro, PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum, Jr. attended the drill (PNA) RMA/CLTC
