CEBU CITY, July 27 Some 50 overweight policemen Thursday underwent a fitness seminar at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) to help them manage their weight.
CCPO Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe said that being overweight hinders their job in fighting criminal elements.
We have to change the stereotype of the policeman with a big belly, Buenafe said.
Police officers from the lower ranks up to the rank of Senior Police Officer (SP0) 4 participated in the seminar conducted by a dietician from the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), he said.
Buenafe said cops who recently joined the force were also asked to attend so they would know how to prevent weight gain.
He said a police officer who is physically fit does not get sick easily and can chase after criminals quicker.
Proper diet and nutrition should be a must among policemen, Buenafe said.
Cecilia Ruiz, chief dietician at the VSMMC, said they might require every policeman to eat only a cup of rice per meal.
It could vary depending on their activity and their measurement. As long as they have to eat healthy foods, she said.
Ruiz, with the help of VSMMC nurses and nutritionists, checked the policemens weight and height to determine if they were overweight or underweight.
The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 found 216 police officers in the region whose weight are not proportional to their height, according to the body mass index (BMI) chart.
Majority of these officers are in their 40s and are overweight. (PNA) CTB/EB/re
