BEIJING, July 28 — The Beijing meteorological center issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and a blue alert for rainstorms Friday night, warning residents to be on guard for adverse weather.
Average precipitation in western Beijing, including the districts of Fangshan, Mentougou, Shijingshan and Haidian, is expected to reach 20 to 50 mm in the six hours after the alerts were issued at 8:40 p.m. Friday, said the center.
The center asked residents to be careful as the downpours may cause flooding and mudslides.
The heaviest rain in six decades lashed Beijing on Saturday, claiming 77 lives. Average precipitation hit 170 mm, while a township in the suburban district of Fangshan recorded 460 mm of rain.
Chinese meteorological authorities use a four-tier color-coded weather warning system of "blue," "yellow," "orange" and "red," with "red" being the most severe. (PNA/Xinhua) CTB/rsm
