Deputy chief Cabinet Sec Sugita faints during Abe's debut news confab

TOKYO, Dec. 27 — Deputy Cabinet Secretary Kazuhiro Sugita fainted Wednesday evening as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was speaking at his maiden news conference after being elected to the nation's top post.

The 71-year-old is suspected of having lost consciousness due to low blood pressure or low blood sugar, the premier's office said. He regained consciousness soon after he was taken out of the news conference room.

Sugita fell on his back while standing with other deputy chief Cabinet secretaries, prompting Abe to stop his remarks for a few seconds before quickly resuming. (PNA/Kyodo)
