Abe to visit nuclear crisis-hit Fukushima power plant Sat.

TOKYO, Dec. 27 — Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit the Fukushima Daiichi power plant Saturday where Japan's worst nuclear crisis has unfolded, his aides said Thursday.

Abe's trip, immediately after he launched his Cabinet Wednesday, is aimed at demonstrating his government is serious in speeding up postdisaster reconstruction efforts while tackling other key issues such as reviving the country's stagnant economy, the aides said.

The aides said Abe is also likely to visit temporary shelters in Fukushima Prefecture, which accommodate many people who have evacuated in the wake of the nuclear accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima plant that was crippled by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that destroyed vast areas in Japan's northeast.
