Mayor of evacuated town opposes restart of nuclear plants

FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Dec. 28 — The mayor of a town that remains off-limits after last year's Fukushima nuclear crisis renewed his opposition Friday to future restarts of nuclear power plants in Japan.

"The government's apparent stance to give priority to restarts hurts the feelings of people in Fukushima Prefecture," Tomioka Mayor Katsuya Endo told a meeting with senior vice environment ministers of the Cabinet Prime Minister Shinzo Abe launched Wednesday.

"Fukushima is absolutely opposed to the government's plan to restart nuclear plants without consensus based on people's discussions," Endo told Shinji Inoue and Kazunori Tanaka from Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. (PNA/Kyodo)
