Suspect in shooting of police officer hunted

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Oct. 21 -– An off duty police officer was shot and wounded on his way home Sunday evening while attempting to appease a neighborhood quarrel in Barangay Gusa, this city.

Police Officer Joel Abuja was shot in the stomach by the suspect identified as Arnold Abellana, reportedly a “toughie” who immediately fled after the shooting.

Abuja was immediately rushed for treatment in a nearby public hospital where doctors declared him out of danger although his condition was being closely monitored.

Police investigators said that Abuja had been already off-duty and was on his way home when he chanced upon a crowd where a fight was in progress.

Being a police officer, Abejo’s instinct to pacify the unruly crowd prompted him to drop by and introduced himself as a police officer, police investigators said.

“Instead of heeding, the suspect shot Abejo hitting him in the stomach,” Pol. Senior Supt. Graciano Mijares, the city’s police chief, said on Monday.

Mijares said that he has ordered a manhunt of the suspect who was known as a “toughie” in the area.

He said the police were readying appropriate charges for filing in court against the suspect. (PNA)
