Shallow quake strikes off eastern Indonesia

JAKARTA, Dec. 30 — A shallow undersea-quake measuring 5.7 Richter scale jolted North Sulawesi in eastern parts of Indonesia on Sunday evening, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.

The quake struck at 22:37 p.m. Jakarta time (1537 GMT) with epicenter at 129 km southeast Bitung of North Sulawesi and with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, an official of the agency told Xinhua.

Indonesia is vulnerable on seismic upheaval as it lies on the " Pacific Ring of Fire", an arch of volcanoes and fault lines surrounding the Pacific Ocean. (PNA/Xinhua)
