MOSCOW, Jan. 30 — A nature reserve in Russias North Caucasus sustained damage estimated at nearly USD 11 million as a result of improper construction work, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The Prosecutor Generals Office said in a statement that violations during construction of a water supply pipeline resulted in unauthorized removal of soil over a total area of more than 17,000 square meters.
Permission to build the pipeline was issued without proper study of the environmental consequences, prosecutors said.
The project was carried out as part of the federal program to develop the North Caucasus and southern Russia territories.
Authorities hired a private contractor to complete the work.(PNA/RIA Novosti)
