ILOILO CITY, Feb. 25 (PNA)- A member of Bantay-Gubat or forest ranger was shot dead Tuesday by a still unidentified gunman in Brgy. Rigador, Ibajay, Aklan.

Police report reaching here said the lifeless body of the victim identified as Steve Gregorio, 33, of Campo Verde in said municipality was sprawled along the road in the barangay when found.

It was learned that the victim was an active member of Bantay-Gubat of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-Aklan).

In his initial investigation, Senior Inspector Ariel Nacar, police chief of Ibajay PNP Station, revealed that the victim was on his way home from a drinking spree when approached by the suspect who shot him on the breast for unknown reason. He also sustained stab wound on his mouth.

Nacar said the victim went to the town’s PNP station the other day to report alleged threat on his life.

The Ibajay PNP, meanwhile, conducted immediate follow-up operation to identify and arrest the suspect but went home empty-handed as the perpetrator hastily escaped after the shooting incident.

The town’s PNP has yet to determine the motive behind the killing and are currently conducting thorough investigation that might lead to the identification and the arrest of the suspect.

Police learned that apart from being strict in his duties in implementing forest laws as Bantay-Gubat, Gregorio also stands as witness to a crime that transpired in town early last year. (PNA)
