5 workers dead after pier overturns off Japan's southernmost island

TOKYO, March 30 — Five construction workers have died and two remain missing after a floating pier they were building overturned Sunday and they fell into the sea off Okinotori Island, Japan's southernmost territory, the land ministry said.

Sixteen workers building the pier at the uninhabited islets, some 1,700 kilometers south of Tokyo, fell into the sea around 7:30 a.m. and nine were rescued, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

The Japan Coast Guard sent two aircraft and two vessels to rescue the missing. Due to geographical distance between the islets and Japan's main islands, however, it may take the coast guard ships several days to arrive at the accident scene. (PNA/Kyodo)
