Two big malls in Bulacan switch-off lights for 'Earth Hour'

MARILAO, Bulacan, Mar 30 –It's light out and what a sight to behold for the sake of the world.

Two of the province's leading supermalls, SM City Marilao and SM City Baliwag, simultaneously switched off lights as they joined the world in celebrating the annual "Earth Hour" Saturday night.

SM City Marilao mall manager Bernadette Velasco said that “Earth Hour” at SM City Marilao and SM City Baliwag was even bigger as the two Bulacan malls solidified their commitment to protect and save the environment by switching to LED (Light-Emitting-Diodes) lighting.

Citing the significant energy-saving and awareness-raising benefits of using the lighting alternative, celebrations at both malls were highlighted by light shows of LED brilliance with literally millions of color combinations.

“ 'Earth Hour' is an opportunity to show how our imagination can inspire and engage our shoppers in saving the environment," Velasco said.

“Today, we would like to promote energy-saving alternatives” she said.

The activity was highlighted by the glow in the dark TRON dance or better known as “ElecTRONica” dance movement inspired this year’s theme "Use Your Power".

Performers reinforced the statement of "Be a Superhero for the Planet" by the precisely timed sequences and carefully coordinated LED-luminescent light suit choreography.

Because each of the performers donned custom-designed LED outfits that can be controlled remotely, dancers can immediately appear and disappear in a pitch-black stage providing a super-hero and futuristic-stop motion component as well as amazing visual impact.

Following the TRON dance performance in SM City Marilao, over 300 LED balloons were likewise given to guests and participants during the blackout.

At exactly 8:30 pm, both malls simultaneously switched off the buildings’ logo including external signages, bill boards and lampposts.

Preceded by the 10-second countdown, stores and car park lights were set at the minimum level to conserve energy while ensuring the safety of mall customers.

As soon as the lights were off, a dramatic lighting of LED candles followed at SM City Marilao.

Local government units, guests as well as SM executives turned up the candles forming the symbolic 60 minutes to show solidarity with the worldwide campaign of saving the earth.

At SM City Baliwag, LED-powered strobe lights and the 60+ walk of fame adorned the 50-meter stretch of the mall.

With Spiderman as the 2014 Earth Hour ambassador, youngsters dressed as superheroes led the lighting ceremony of the “Walk of Flame”.

Guests also used colorful glowsticks in a festive performance to brighten the mall grounds.

The ceremonial switch off of lights was led by Mayor Carolina Dellosa together with Rotary Club president Jayjay Ponce Gonzales and SM City Baliwag mall manager Andrew Cristobal in SM City Baliwag.

WWF Philippine project development officer Paul Saludar, who shared the advocacy to protect the environment, on the other hand, headed the ceremonial switch off in SM City Marilao.

Beverly Bernardo Cruz, public relations officer of SM City Baliwag, said that “with hundreds of millions of people, each making small commitments to living sustainably, SM City Baliwag and SM City Marilao along with all SM Supermalls hope to inspire as many individuals to use one’s power in making a difference and saving the earth.” (PNA)
