LEGAZPI CITY, June 19 - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol regional office will lead stakeholders from the various sectors of the society in the planting of trees at the foot of Mt. Mayon in connection with the celebration of Arbor Day on June 25.
DENR Bicol Regional Executive Director Gilbert Gonzales said he expects a bigger participation of various sectors in the tree-planting to be specifically conducted in Barangay Lidong, Sto. Domingo, Albay.
Gonzales said the village is among the areas that are targeted for the National Greening Program of the government, which aims to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares of land in the entire nation.
The activity is one way of making the public a part of the governments effort to reforest mountains, he added.
About 2,000 seedlings were planted on the same date last year, which was participated in by 400 volunteers.
Gonzales said the Arbor Day celebration is mandated under Proclamation No. 643 where all agencies of the government, government-owned and controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civic groups and others are enjoined to be a part of. (PNA)
