KALIBO, Aklan, Nov. 24 — The province of Aklan continually tops the National Greening Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Western Visayas.
Ivene Reyes, head of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), said this has been the trend of the NGP since 2011.
The NGP was created in 2011 by the DENR, hoping to plant 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares all over the country.
"In 2011, we surpassed the 502 hectares target; in 2012, we were able to plant trees in 1,700 hectares. This year, we are confident of planting trees at 2,300 hectares all over the province," said Reyes.
The NGP is expected to end by 2016.
This week, a team from the Central Office, is expected to arrive here to validate the NGP-Aklan achievements for 2014.
"Based on our records, we had a survival rate of an average of 90 percent," said Reyes.(PNA)
