Japan Atomic Power eyes spinoff of nuclear power operations

TOKYO, Jan. 28 — Japan Atomic Power Co. is considering spinning off its mainstay nuclear power operations into two companies to boost its technical capacity with expertise in two types of nuclear reactors, sources close to the matter said Tuesday.

The utility, which only deals with nuclear power, is mulling setting up a holding company and reorganize its operations into two companies in west and east under its umbrella, one for boiling water reactors and the other for pressurized water reactors to gather human resources separately for each type, the sources said.

The move is aimed at creating an organization that is suited to supporting major power utilities in decommissioning their nuclear reactors in an effort to rebuild the company's struggling business. (PNA/Kyodo)
