Iloilo embarks on massive riverbank reforestation

ILOILO CITY, March 26 — The Iloilo provincial government through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) has embarked on massive tree planting along river banks in the province.

Gov. Arthur Defensor, Sr. recently approved the release of P300,000 for stream bank reforestation along Asue River in Barangay Agbobolo, Ajuy; Aganan River in Brgy. Sta. Cruz, San Miguel; Jalaud River in Brgy. Tabucan, Barotac Nuevo; Tangyan River in Brgy. Igtalongon, Igbaras; Aganan River in Brgy. Bagumbayan, Alimodian; and Sibalom River in Brgy. Poblacion, Tigbauan.

PENRO undertakes this project to prevent soil erosion on river banks as part of the provincial government’s program dubbed as Action for Regreening and Transformation for Climate Change Adaptation (ART for CCA).

ART for CCA uses the “ridge-to-reef” approach which refers to the planting of tree seedlings in upland areas and planting of mangrove propagules in coastal areas.

The province also allotted P1,514,025 for the development of agro-forestry areas in Barangay Danao, Leon (275 hectares) and in Barangay Guipis, Anilao (50 hectares).

Meanwhile, it also allotted P2.68 million for the development of 10 hectares beach forest and 55 hectares mangrove forest in four coastal municipalities.

The beach forest will be located in Barangays Guibongan, Mambatad, Bacauan, Palaca, Tabunacan, Damilisan, Oyungan, Lanutan, Maringyan, San Rafael and Narat-an in Miag-ao town.

The mangrove forests, on the other hand, will be in Barangay San Fernando, Barotac Viejo (8 hectares), Barangay Nanding Lopez, Dumangas (20 hectares), and Barangays Bucana Bunglas and Pantalan Nabaye, Ajuy (27 hectares). (PNA)
