MGB underscores proper waste disposal to address flooding in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY, June 23 — Iloilo City should work on intensifying its solid waste program to address flooding.

Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) geosciences division officer-in-charge Mae Y. Magarzo said that this city is prone to flooding and its coastal areas to erosion.

“When you see the (geo-hazard) map most of the areas are prone to flooding because we are on the flood area and also areas that are on the river delta,” she said.

Aside from ensuring that it has a proper land use plan, the city government should look into its mitigating measures on proper waste disposal.

Iloilo City should not be suffering anymore from flooding because it has its flood control system. The only thing that causes flood is the clogged drainage system,” she said.

On Tuesday, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Western Visayas gathered officials of this city’s 180 villages for an information, education and communication (IEC) campaign on its detailed geohazard (rain-induced landslide and flooding).

Magarzo said that they are done with the conduct of the geohazard mapping with a 1:10,000 map scale although the result is yet to be approved by their central office.

They are currently intensifying their IEC to update concerned local government units of the preliminary results.

The IEC was already done in Lezo and Malinao in Aklan while another one is slated in Kalibo this June 26. (PNA)
