ILOILO CITY, Feb. 15 — Various universities in the city of Iloilo were encouraged to join and perform in a series of special events showcasing Ilonggo sports, arts, culture and heritage in this year’s Paraw Regatta festival.
Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation Inc. (IPRFI) acting president Ronald Raymond Sebastian said that the schools that they have invited were very receptive and they are helping the foundation in terms of identifying the activities.
Specifically, universities to perform in the week-long festival are John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University (JBLFMU),West Visayas State University (WVSU), University of Iloilo-PHINMA, and St. Therese MTC Colleges, among others.
Sebastian said that students from the College of Physical Education, Sports, Culture, Arts and Recreation (PESCAR) of WVSU will be performing a theater show featuring the legend of Maragtas.
“We asked them to make a performance to show how rich our Ilonggo culture and heritage is,” Sebastian said.
The week-long festivity which started Sunday will also feature slalom competition, main paraw race, cultural shows, poster-making, miniature paraw-making, food-and-cook fest, photo contest and exhibit, beauty pageant, trade fair, painting contest, bike tour, fishing tournament, beach sports, and watersports.
The city government of Iloilo provided the biggest amount of financial assistance to the foundation for the festival according to Sebastian. He added that John B. Lacson Maritime Foundation Inc. also gave substantial amount. (PNA)
